The Great Harbor House Shootout March 18-20, 2011
Every year high school and junior high students from all over Maine gather on MDI for the Great Harbor House Shootout. Learn more
The Great Harbor House Shootout got its start in l992 with a modest roster of seven teams. Last year, Harbor House played host to seventy youth basketball teams from every county in our vast state. There is no program like it in all of Maine. Its popularity is a tribute to the power of a great idea and a great need. With four divisions of play for girls and boys, our three-day tournament gives young people the opportunity to compete, excel and develop invaluable life lessons and sportsmanship skills.
The event has had several mentors, the first being Guy Dunbar who is credited with naming the event, taking his inspiration from the Great Alaskan Shootout college tournament. In l994, the tournament became affiliated with another Maine Hoop legend, long time U-Maine men's basketball coach, Skip Chappelle. And that very same year, MDI had to beat a Stephen King coached Bangor Ram team twice to win the tournament.
The Great Harbor House Shootout is a great example of how sports can bring kids together, build leadership through competition and foster team spirit.
